Presbyterian First In State To Offer New High-Tech Angiovac Catheterization

Release Date:

September 22, 2014

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Presbyterian Hospital is one of a select group of medical centers across the country – and the only one in New Mexico – to offer AngioVac catheterization.  This innovative procedure offers patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT), blood clots in veins deep within the body, a minimally invasive option.

A team of interventional radiologists led by Dr. Kent Hootman of Radiology Associates of Albuquerque have already performed several successful procedures at Presbyterian Hospital.

With this approach, flexible catheters are inserted into the vein through tiny incisions and a pump is activated. This creates the suction needed to remove the blood clots from the venous system into a filter.

“Presbyterian is on the leading edge of medicine that is making standard procedures safer for patients,” said Dr. Hootman. “As interventional radiologists, we are excited to be able to offer AngioVac to our patients.”

Interventional Radiologists perform minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ of the body. These procedures are less painful and patients experience shorter recovery times than they normally would experience after surgery.
