Lincoln County Medical Center Offers Students a View into Health Care Careers

March 7, 2018

RUIDOSO, N.M. – From exploring ultrasound technology to participating in a mock accident drill, local middle school students recently experienced a firsthand look at health care careers at Lincoln County Medical Center.

The Medical Applications of Science for Health (MASH) camp brought 56 students from Ruidoso, Mescalero Apache and Capitan Middle Schools on two different days to explore a range of health care fields. On February 28, 12 students from Mescalero and nine students from Capitan attended the camp.

The goal is for students to explore jobs in health care and learn about the education and experience needed for these professions, said Todd Oberheu, administrator, Lincoln County Medical Center.

Many Capitan students are interested in health care careers but may not know how to pursue them, said Theresa T. Kennedy, a licensed school counselor who is also district test coordinator and dual credit coordinator for Capitan Municipal Schools.

"MASH camp made this an engaging opportunity that students know is within their reach," said Kennedy, who coordinated the camp for Capitan students and attended with them. "Understanding that everyone from first responders to physicians and lab professionals are integral to the health of our community allowed students to become interested in professions they may not have known existed."

During the camp, students also explored surgery equipment, learned how patients are intubated in the emergency department and how specimens are collected at the laboratory.

"By helping the MASH camp students explore a range of rewarding possibilities in health care, we hope to inspire the next generation of nurses, doctors, paramedics and laboratory technicians," Oberheu said.
