Lincoln County Medical Center Holds Third Annual Mash Camp to Introduce Kids to Health Care Careers

March 5, 2019Event

RUIDOSO, N.M. – Twenty seven Ruidoso Middle School students donned scrubs and gloves and got the inside scoop on health care careers as they explored surgical care, physical therapy, emergency medicine and more at Lincoln County Medical Center.

The third annual Medical Applications of Science for Health (MASH) camp brought students to LCMC on February 26 to explore a range of health care fields.

"The goal is for students to explore jobs in health care and learn about the education and experience needed for these professions," said Todd Oberheu, chief hospital executive, Lincoln County Medical Center.

During the camp, students used surgical equipment in the operating room, learned how IV medications are made in the pharmacy, and how cupping therapy is applied in Physical Therapy.

Tricia Jameson, health education teacher at Ruidoso Middle School, joined her students at the camp and said she is "incredibly grateful" for LCMC staff who provide the hands-on experience.

"Due to the academic rigor involved in most healthcare professions the opportunity for my students to get hands on experience this early is critical," she said. "It really does start in high school for some of these students who want to become doctors, nurses, physical therapists and pharmacists. This early exposure helps to motivate my students towards achieving those goals."

"We all have so much fun doing this," Oberheu said. "The MASH camp is a great way to introduce young people in our community to incredible careers in health care. We'd love to be hiring a few of these young people in a decade or two."
